THE POWER OF GOODNESS AND GENTLENESS The Fruit of the Spirit – Part 6
8
‘But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control...’ Galatians 5:22-23 NASB
10
‘... early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a
11
woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her.
12
What do you say?” They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer,
13
so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. When the accusers heard this,
14
they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman,
15
“Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”’ John 8:2-12 NLT
17
Goodness – ‘doing the right thing for the right reason’
19
Goodness is active rather than passive
21
‘“…let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”’ John 8:7 NLT
23
Goodness chooses grace rather than law
25
‘…“Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”’ John 8:10-11 NLT
27
Gentleness is ‘strength under control’
29
Gentleness chooses how to act rather than simply reacting
31
‘A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.’ Proverbs 15:1 NLT
33
Gentleness protects rather than crushes
37
‘Here is my servant! I have made him strong. He is my chosen one; I am pleased with him. I have given him my Spirit, and he will bring justice to the nations.
38
He won’t shout or yell or call out in the streets. He won’t break off a bent reed or put out a dying flame, but he will make sure that justice is done.’ Isaiah 42:1-3 CEV
40
‘Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently...’ Galatians 6:1 NIV
