Is war strong enough to separate a true friendship? Early Sunday Morning A Diary Of Amber Billows Ellen Emerson White KATE stechert

1 Cup of Plot Amber Billows has just settled in to her NEW school. She has made one best friend, Allison. However, her dad is getting bored of Washington D.C. because there is nothing to write about; since he’s a writer. Amber has found out that there is much to write about in Hawaii. Unfortunately, her dad has too…

1 cup of plot (continued) Amber has moved to Hawaii and ends up liking it much better than she thought she would. Amber’s brother, Andy tells Amber that if she ever tries to surf she will be eaten, she took that off her “to do” list. Amber finally went to school and meets a girl named Kame. Kame is Japanese and tells Amber about how the war is coming and she should beware.

2 Teaspoons of CHARACTER Amber Billows- the main character who experiences the bombing of Pearl Harbor with her family. Andy Billows- the brother of Amber who also experiences Pearl Harbor and is devastated by the bombing. Mom- mother of Amber and Andy. Very quiet and doesn’t really care about the war; name unspecified Dad- father of Amber and Andy, a writer who causes the family to move to Hawaii because he needed something to write about; name unspecified Allison- Ambers old friend back in Washington D.C., Mom is forcing Amber to write back to her so her feelings wont get hurt.

2 teaspoons of CHARACTER (continued) Kame- amber’s best friend now in Hawaii. Kame is Japanese and her family is worried about the war. Lieutenant Lockhart- dad’s friend that says war with Japan is right around the corner. Dad does not believe him and is not worried about war.

2 tablespoons of EXCITEMENT On Sunday December, 7 1941 Amber woke up to the sounds of rifle shots outside her window, she looked out and saw a putrid, blood-red sky. Close by in another room she could hear her brother Andy yell “LOOK IT’S PEARL HARBOR!!!”. Amber leaned out her window to get a closer look, she looked over to Pearl Harbor and saw stacks of smoke rising up, she heard people screaming and saw people

2 tablespoons of excitement (continued) Running to take cover, Amber witnessed the whole thing

Mix thoroughly and bake. When cool, frost with special icing: A. ½ Cup of Opinion: I really didn’t like this book because there was a lot of bombing and war. This book didn’t really get interesting until the end where everyone got along and I could understand it more. One thing I did like though was that it was very descriptive in describing what happened at all times.

Mix thoroughly and bake. When cool, frost with special icing: B. 1 Teaspoon of Recommendation: I recommend this book to readers who are interested in learning abut Pearl Harbor without too much graphic violence or gore- involved descriptions.

Finally sprinkle on the following information: In the end Amber can be friends with Kame again but since Kame is Japanese all conversations have to be monitored. That’s ok though because Amber can still enjoy her new life in Hawaii and maybe go surfing…
