FIATECH’s Capital Projects Technology Roadmap: how we can use it today Ric Jackson Director The FIATECH Consortium National Streamlining Conference Washington, DC February 15-16, 2006
2
FIATECH Industry-led, collaborative, not-for-profit, RD&D consortium –Approx. 50 owners, contractors, suppliers & research organizations Accelerate deployment of integration and automation technology –Formed by CII & NIST to address breakthrough opportunity –Focus on joint industry research, development, deployment Projects: 11 completed, 10 active, 4 proposed –30 delivered products Capital Projects Technology Roadmap –Industry-wide research agenda (not just FIATECH) –Coalescing industry, industry associations, & funding agencies

8
FIATECH’s Role Accelerating integration and automation –Deployment Projects Developing industry- wide RD&D agenda –Capital Projects Technology Roadmap Coalescing industry, industry associations, and funding agencies around the plan
9
Current FIATECH Projects Product and Process Survey and Analysis BIM for Precast Concrete Automated Design Workflow Mapping and Checklists Global Valve Cross-Reference e-Catalog Value Streamlining Control Valve Engineering and Procurement Automating Equipment Information Exchange Smart Chips and Valuing Emerging Technologies Leveraging Technology to Improve Construction Productivity Competencies Start in School...But Have We Identified What Industry Needs? Accelerating Deployment of ISO 15926
10
FIATECH’s Capital Projects Technology Roadmap Initiative Create, maintain a technology roadmap for the capital projects industry Use it to guide investments in technology RD&D
12
Companies Leading Development of the Elements of the FIATECH Roadmap
13
Roadmap Facts 330 pages Nine Elements 43 Focus Areas 161 Projects “The Roadmap is both a thing and a process.” “This is not just a FIATECH agenda; it’s for the whole industry.”
15
Academic Research Agenda
16
International RD&D Agenda
17
FIATECH Technology Roadmapping Initiative is a way to… Leverage scarce resources Coalesce –Industry –Industry associations –Academic institutions –Technology developers Reduce –Fragmentation –Wasteful overlap/competition Orchestrate international initiatives –for capital projects delivery, operation, and maintenance
18
Where’s the BIM? FIATECH Vision –“The vision of the future is of a highly automated and seamlessly integrated environment across all phases and processes of the capital project life cycle. All information is available to whomever needs it, whenever it’s needed, and wherever it’s needed.” Building Information Model (BIM) –“A digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. As such it serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle from inception onward.”
20
So, how can this thing and process help us with streamlining the permitting process?
21
A Little istory Semiconductor Industry –Threat (offshore) –Industry coalescence –$100M industry funding –$100M government funding –SEMATECH –SIA Roadmap Discrete Part Manufacturing –Threat (Japan) –Industry coalescence –$11M government funding –NCMS –IMT Roadmap –National Initiative
22
Note the Common Themes Threat Understanding of the size of the problem –Cost/Benefit Studies Identifying amount of the industrial investment Industry Coalescence –Development of a common vision –Development of a roadmap Development of a national agenda
23
The Roadmapping Process … … provides a structured methodology for identifying needs, developing plans to fulfill needs, and measuring progress
24
We need, then,… A common vision Clear understanding of our current state A detailed description of how to get from here to there Connect to, and build on, the FIATECH Roadmap …this will give us a Roadmap for Streamlining, and this is how you “set a course for change.”
25
The Planets are Aligned for Change Business drivers are compelling Technology now available to enable interoperability Users can describe requirements more clearly Vendors recognize interoperability opens new markets …then why aren’t we changing?
26
Top Ten Reasons for Not Changing 1. “Lawyers.” 2. “Lawyers.” 3. “Introducing technology introduces liability.” 4. “I don’t have time to try something new.” 5. “I don’t understand it, so I don’t want to try it.” 6. “I’m not comfortable with new technology.” 7. “Most of this stuff doesn’t work.” 8. “I tried that once, and got burned.” 9. “Technology costs: people, time, money.” 10. “Change is risky.”

28
Bottom Line We have momentum – we must not lose it We have some tools – we need more Business benefit is being achieved today – build on it We know the cost of NOT doing it Many are already committed – NOT ENOUGH For it to happen everyone must get involved “We need YOU to make it happen.”
