7  Oldest University in Germany  Founded in 1386 by Elector Ruprecht I of Palatinate  In the late 16 th Century it became one of the most important centers of the Reformation and of Calvinism  17 th Century it lost its collection of manuscripts, the unique “Bibliotheca Palatina”, and later all of its buildings  In 1803 Karl Friedrich of Baden endowed the University with new statutes enabling it to develop into a seat of academic excellence by the end of the 19 th century - The Ruprecht-Karls-Universität thus owes its double name to both of its founders

8 Studentenkarzer (Student Jail) 1778-1914 University students were tossed into the Studentenkarzer if convicted of misdeeds: Drinking Singing Womanizing Goofing around  Fed only bread and water  Sentences- minimum of 3 days  Women who were admitted to the university from 1900 and onward were never imprisoned here  Time would be passed bye carving inscriptions and drawing graffiti, which still covers the walls  Used to prove manhood
