The Pueblo Revolt By 1640 the Native Americans in New Mexico were beginning to practice their own religion again because the Spanish were taking so much of the Native Americans food supply which was causing starvation and disease.

The Pueblo Revolt In 1675 the Spanish governor Antonio de Otermin (oh ter Meen) jailed 47 Pueblo religious leaders including a medicine man name Pope (Poh Pay).

The Pueblo Revolt Pope was released after the Pueblo threatened to leave the mission. When Pueblo was released, he began to plan a rebellion.

The Pueblo Revolt Pueblo convinced the Pueblo communities to unite and to ally with the Apache to try and force the Spanish to leave.

The Pueblo Revolt On August 10 th, 1680 the Pueblo attacked the Spanish. The revolt lasted nine days. The Spanish survivors were forced to leave New Mexico

The Pueblo Revolt 11 years later in 1691 the Spanish returned to New Mexico. Diego de Vargas convinced the Pueblo to accept friendship with Spain. The Pueblo were allowed to live in their own communities and to practice their own religion.
