Toners Also called “Fox and Hound” Use to locate or trace cables The “Fox” generates a tone and injects it into a cable. The “Hound” detects the tone and finds the cable.

Cable Tester Answers the question: “Is this cable good?” Inexpensive models detect opens, shorts, and reversed wires. More expensive models may also indicate cable runs that are too long, the location of an open or short, and EMI.

The Protocol Analyzer Hardware or Software Implementations Captures, displays, and analyzes packets Used for analyzing the nature of the traffic sent across the network.

Protocol Analyzer Modes Display packets selectively in real time. Capture selected packets for later analysis. Rebroadcast captured data streams.

Windows NT/2000 Server’s Protocol Analyzer. Called “Network Monitor” Found in Administrative Tools May have to be installed from the Windows NT/2000 Server CD.

Network Monitor Windows NT Server’s software implementation of a protocol analyzer. Used for analyzing the nature of the traffic sent across the network. Display packets selectively in real time. Capture selected packets for later analysis.

Task Manager Used to determine which tasks and applications are running and the status of each, allowing you to shut down ones that are in trouble. Indicates which processes are running, allowing you to shut down ones that are causing problems. Gives a quick overview of CPU and memory usage.

Performance Monitor/Console Observe and chart the “vital signs” of the server. Create logs which show network performance. Track and log over 250 different characteristics of the server. With the proper software, monitor the vital signs of workstations as well.

Performance Monitor Modes Chart – Create custom charts to monitor selected server performance characteristics. Alert – Create a file showing the instances when selected values are exceeded. Log – Capture and log data over a long period to indicate trends. Report – Creates simple reports from log files.
