1 INFORMATIVE SPEECH Seminar on Culture @ Tuesday, Nov. 9 th, 2010

2 Seminar on Culture  Central topic: Culture. (Anything related to culture will do)  Date: Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010  Time: 10:10-13:00  Each presentation requires 20 mins (15 mins speech + 5 mins Q&A)  Two presenters should distribute your presentation duties equally.

3 Schedule  10/12-10/19: Get into a group of two. Find a topic for your informative speech. Write out your proposal outline. Post it on the Wikis.  10/19-10/26: Read everyone’s proposal on the Wikis. Decide whether each topic is workable and give comments. (You topic needs to be approved by the whole class; otherwise you need to change topics.)  10/26-11/2 (2 weeks): Preparation.  11/9: Informative speech presentation.

4 Topic  Main goal: sth related to culture.  Three standpoints to take:  Sth globalwide  Universality  Sth which others have but we don’t  Specificity  Sth we both have but different  Comparison

5 Proposal for Informative Speech  Central topic: Culture  To give your own definition of “culture.”  Topic (A rough direction is fine. No need to give a specific “title” at this stage.)  Rationale  To explain the reasons why the topic you choose fits your definition of “culture.”  Preview  To briefly introduce the topic, and tell the possible directions you are going to probe into the topic.  Significance  To explain the importance of knowing this topic.
