1 The Spanish American War How It All Began… Cuba = Colony of Spain who wants independence. Jose Marti - Cuban rebel who is exiled. Moves to N.Y. Marti encourages independence, dies in battle in 1895. Cuban rebels (Marti’s followers) are captured by Spain= many mistreated and die. Americans shocked and outraged at the brutality the Spanish show toward the Cubans.

4 Tensions Build Feb. 1898 the U.S. Battleship Main mysteriously explodes in Havana’s harbor. Americans assume this is the doing of the Spanish. Congress declares war.

5 Spanish-American War A disaster for Spain Spanish army was defeated in Cuba, and their fleets were destroyed in both the Philippines and Cuba U.S. wins war after three months In the treaty that ended the war, the U.S. gains Puerto Rico and Guam. Purchase Philippines for $20 million

6 Spanish-American War Spain agreed to give up Cuba, but the U.S. did not want Cuba to have full independence Cuba becomes a protectorate of the U.S. (by forcing it to include the Platt Amendment) Platt Amendment: allows the U.S. to intervene in Cuba, approve foreign treaties, and to lease land at Guantánamo Bay for a naval base.

7 Other results of the Spanish- American War Revolt in the Philippines U.S. made the Philippines a colony, did not grant them independence Emilio Aguinaldo – He became the rebel leader in the Philippines who had cooperated with U.S. forces against the Spanish. (because he felt betrayed) 3 years of fighting left 200,000 Filipinos dead

8 Philippines They did not win independence The U.S. ruled through an appointed governor (by the president). This lasted until 1935. Granted independence after WWII – in 1946.
