4. Tensions Build Feb. 1898 the U.S. Battleship Main mysteriously explodes in Havana’s harbor. Americans assume this is the doing of the Spanish. Congress declares war.

5. Spanish-American War A disaster for Spain Spanish army was defeated in Cuba, and their fleets were destroyed in both the Philippines and Cuba U.S. wins war after three months In the treaty that ended the war, the U.S. gains Puerto Rico and Guam. Purchase Philippines for $20 million

8. Philippines They did not win independence The U.S. ruled through an appointed governor (by the president). This lasted until 1935. Granted independence after WWII – in 1946.
