Genocide: Darfur
3
Darfur Background Information Lots of droughts (no rain) Size of Texas and divided into 3 states of about 6 million people total before 2003 People are mainly farmers or nomadic herders Between 40 to 80 ethnic groups are in Darfur and up until 2003 were living a peaceful coexistence
4
Conflict Begins 2003 the govt. was trying to end a civil war in the country between permanent farmers and nomadic herders (those that move around) The permanent ones felt the govt was not helping them so they formed rebel groups to be heard,SLM and JEM The rebel groups attacked govt. military installations The govt. responded with violent military raids using govt. armed militia called the Janjaweed with weapons from China and Russia This group targeted ethnic groups who were helping the rebels and casualties were great…400 villages were destroyed with millions fleeing
5
Darfur Deaths: 400,000+ The UN estimates that in 2008 4.7 million people in Darfur were/are affected by the conflict Wiped out entire villages, destroyed water and food supplies, raped, murdered and tortured millions of civilians Many believe Islamists want control of Sudan and to wipe out all non- Islamic citizens
6
What is happening today? On some small level the killings continue Most believe it is over and things are calming down There has been an election in which the southern part of Sudan voted on whether or not they should create a new country: South Sudan…this may start another genocide since the northern govt. does not want this to happen and the Janjaweed supports the north SOUTH SUDAN is it’s own country now (it is on your map) but questions arise as to their safety Recently the Sudanese govt. stopped peacekeeping forces from helping, they won’t negotiate, they will not prosecute, they even kicked 13 aid groups out of Darfur WILL IT GENOCIDE STOP COMPLETELY IN THESE COUNTRIES???

FIRST THEY CAME FOR THE JEWS First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me. -Pastor Martin Niemöller
