2 What is the Reformation? Catholic Church became troubled and the peasants were not happy with the clergy.

3 Causes The Church became caught up in worldly affairs and spent too much money which led to the selling of indulgences.

4 Martin Luther Martin Luther was the most famous rebel during the Reformation and he developed the 95 Theses.

5 John Calvin John Calvin was also a famous rebel during the Reformation who preached predestination and set up a theocracy.

6 Effects Luther’s and Calvin’s ideas spread like wildfire throughout Europe. Most of Europe is now divided religiously. The Reformation led to a period of anti- Semitism.

7 Terms Indulgence- a pardon for committed sins during a person’s lifetime. Recant- give up one’s views Predestination- the idea that God had long ago determined who would gain salvation Theocracy- a government run by church leaders
