What is the Reformation? Catholic Church became troubled and the peasants were not happy with the clergy.

Causes The Church became caught up in worldly affairs and spent too much money which led to the selling of indulgences.

Martin Luther Martin Luther was the most famous rebel during the Reformation and he developed the 95 Theses.

John Calvin John Calvin was also a famous rebel during the Reformation who preached predestination and set up a theocracy.

Effects Luther’s and Calvin’s ideas spread like wildfire throughout Europe. Most of Europe is now divided religiously. The Reformation led to a period of anti- Semitism.

Terms Indulgence- a pardon for committed sins during a person’s lifetime. Recant- give up one’s views Predestination- the idea that God had long ago determined who would gain salvation Theocracy- a government run by church leaders
