INTRODUCING:
2
Our vision is to be the leading pan- European non-profit organisation dedicated to education and cultural exchange among singers of all ages, especially among children and young people in the field of vocal music. Our Vision Europa Cantat is a founding member of IFCM and a member of the European/International Music Council as well as Culture Action Europe, Musica International, and the International Choral Festival Network.
3
The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat is the result of a merger between Europa Cantat - European Federation of Young Choirs (EFYC), founded in 1960/1963 and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Europäischer Chorverbände (AGEC), founded in 1955. The merger was completed in January 2011. Looking back - merger
4
Choir organisations from Austria, Germany, the Netherland and Switzerland decided to found AGEC in 1952. The association was officially founded with the first board elected in Strasbourg in 1955. Since then the association grew continously, with new national and regional choral organisations from all over Europe. History of AGEC
5
The main concerns of AGEC were the develoment of singing culture in general and among young people, music education, conducting and composing. The main activities were a composition prize, the EuroChoir, the Euro-Festivalchoir, the co-organisation of conductig courses and a competition for conductors as well as the edition of songbooks. History of AGEC
6
Europa Cantat was founded in the 1960ies by conductors from countries involved in the 2nd World War. They wanted to make sure that their young singers would not want to go into war against each other once they had spent a complete festival living together, singing together and singing for each other. History of EC
7
The main and first activity of Europa Cantat – European Federation of Young choirs was the EUROPA CANTAT Festival. In addition the federation organised International Singing Weeks, academies and a competition for conductors, the European Youth Choir (until 2001), the World Youth Choir (in cooperation with IFCM and JMI), seminars and study tours for conductors and managers, events promoting the integration of handicapped singers and different conferences. History of EC
8
The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat has around 50 member organisations in 40 European countries and several hundred member choirs and individual members in over 50 countries worldwide. The European Choral Association – Europa Cantat cooperates with other associations and music institutes and has recently started cooperating with research institutes. Membership
9
The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat directly represents more than one million and reaches out to more than 20 million singers, conductors and composers in over 40 European countries including new and future members of the European Union. Reaching Out
10
The European Choral Association - Europa Cantat is a network of organisations, choirs and conductors in Europe. The General Secretariat offers information and services about the choral world in Europe. Through our membership in the IFCM and EMC/IMC we are also connected to the choral world outside Europe and to other music organisations. 11
One challenge of the merger, which we mostly consider as being a very positive step, is that the European Choral Association now has more members and more activities and thus a bigger need for financial stability than Europa Cantat or AGEC in the past – and this is difficult to achieve in times in which the effects of the financial crisis are hitting cultural life throughout Europe. Friends‘ association
12
We have therefore decided to create an association called “Friends of Choral Music in Europe” (in German: “Förderverein Freunde der europäischen Chormusik”). The purpose of the association with seat in Bonn is the promotion of intercultural dialogue and of arts and culture, especially of choral music by giving moral and financial support to the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat. www.EuropeanChoralAssociation.org/frien ds Friends‘ association

Some quotes Utrecht 2009 In his New Year‘s Speech the Mayor referred to the EUROPA CANTAT event as the „most important cultural event of the year 2009“ Bonn, Study of the Beethovenfestival The Study has shown that the City is profiting from two aspects: on the one hand the vast and mostly positive media reporting which - measured - goes well beyond the subsidies paid by the city (…) on the other hand the money spent in the region, not only by the festival itself (Umwegrentabilität)
