Definition: Adverbs often give more information about verbs. They answer the question “How …?” Example: Jill walks slowly. How did she walk? Slowly! Explanation: Adverbs -- ◦ usually describe the action of a verb. ◦ usually end in "-ly." ◦ sometimes have irregular forms. ◦ usually follow the verb they describe.

-y becomes –ily ◦ Easy easily -ble becomes –bly ◦ Terrible terribly Irregular: ◦ Good – well ◦ Fast fast ◦ Direct direct ◦ Hard hard ◦ Late late ◦ Low low ◦ Loud loud

short adverbs: ◦ between subject (onderwerp) and verb (werkwoord): he slowly turned around. ◦ After the first verb, when there are more verbs in the sentence: They have clearly gone too far! ◦ After am, is, are, was, were: That dog is never quiet.

Longer adverbs, and short adverbs with stress (nadruk): ◦ After the verb: John was talking very seriously to her. ◦ At the beginning of the sentence: Then he opened the door.
