CE 10 Unit: Reverence for Life

 Horton Hears a Who Recap  Concept of Personhood  Sanctity of Life  Examples of how our society devalues life

 Defining a person may seem easy but history is full of examples where certain groups of people have been considered less than human by other people in power.  This has led to abuses such as slavery, the Holocaust, discrimination, genocide, and abortion

 To truly know what something is, we must define it objectively, independent of feelings or beliefs.  How would you define a person?  1. appearance  2. powers  3. conditions  4. final goal

Personhood depends on appearance  A person is defined as a physical, material being who is meant to enjoy pleasure and avoid pain.  If someone does not look a certain way, or lacks certain physical functions, we may think he or she is not a person.

Personhood depends on ability to achieve  In order to be fully human, a person has to have the potential to achieve all, or at least some of these subjective things.  What about the personhood of the unborn, the elderly, the disabled, the socially marginalized, the poor, and others invulnerable populations?

Personhood depends on the potential to give and receive love.  The unborn, the elderly, the disabled etc., are all people because they all have the potential to participate in love.  Without definition 3 we miss out on the unconditional worth and dignity of human persons.

Personhood is recognized in all humans because we are made in God’s image.  Level 4 understands the meaning of human life as union with the unconditional love of God. Therefore, any being who can ultimately recognize and receive the unconditional love of God is a person.  Since all human beings are made in the image and likeness of God, and created for His unconditional love, all human beings are human persons.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:26-27 This means people are reflections of God. In humans, something of God himself can be seen. We have a soul which lives on after the body has died. We are special and different from other species.

 God makes and loves each person, so everyone has value: unborn, elderly, healthy, ill, useful members of society or in need of care.  Life is a gift from God.  Therefore life should be preserved at all stages – from conception to natural end

 This means we have a responsibility to take care of ourselves.  We should do something useful with our lives, not just waste it, and we should take care of our own health and other people’s.  How does society devalue life?  How do advertisements and music degrade the human image?
