Meeting basic needs as a Jellyfish Unlike most animals, jellyfish don’t exactly have a home. They just swim, and swim, and swim. Its like a heartbeat. It will be slow or fast but it doesn’t stop until they die. Their enemy is air. When out of water they completely collapse. See, look at the picture. The one right over there… For food, they eat fish, shrimp, crabs, tiny plants(only on rare occasions), and sometimes even other species of jellyfish! One jellyfish egg can make thousands of jellyfish so it is not a big deal at all when one dies. Also, they can survive in polluted areas if the pollution level is low. Some scientists think that the jellyfish population is actually growing.

Food Source as Jellyfish For food, they eat fish, shrimp, crabs, tiny plants(only on rare occasions), and sometimes even other species of jellyfish! When prey enters their tentacles, there are tiny barbs that pokes into the animals flesh; then they release venom into the animals. It will stun or paralyze the prey. Then the jellyfish uses its oral arms and removes the animal from its tentacles and shoves it in its mouth. Jellies don’t chew and the animal is put right into the jellies stomach. They digest really fast so the food doesn’t slow them down very much. Jellyfish eat fish and other sea creatures that are small because their bodies are built to survive without a lot of them. They get the nutrients they need to survive by eating them. They find them wherever they are swimming.

Jellyfish Habitat Jellyfish live in an under sea ecosystem That is most of the time in saltwater. But not always. Jellyfish live in this ecosystem because there food is here. Out of water, a jellyfish will completely collapse. They are completely helpless once out of water. Jellyfish cannot breath air. They have to be in water or they will quickly die.

Functio ns of a Jellyfish Jellyfish use their tentacles to sting their prey and predators. Jellyfish use their mouth to eat prey and predators. Jellyfish use their hood to protect their insides.
