Come up with one original discussion question for the other groups. 1. How does Madame Schacter know about the fire before she gets there!?! 2. Do you think the fire that the lady sees symbolizes anything? If so, what does it symbolize? 3. Do you think the Wiesels stayed because they felt responsible or helpless? 4. Why did the man in the Hungarian police leave before waiting for them to open the window and warn them? Who was he? 5. Why do you think that the German officers kept counting off the people so many times in the street? 6. Why is hope the unifying force in both the ghettos and the concentration camps?

Come up with one original discussion question for the other groups. 1. Can you blame the Jewish community for not believing Moshe the Beadle when he warned them? 2. Why do you think the Jews didn’t leave the ghetto or revolt when they knew deep down something was wrong? 3. What did the Greek fire that Madame Schacter “imagined” symbolize in the book Night? 4. What is the last conversation you would have with your family if you knew it was your last day alive? 5. Why did the Gestapo change the way they acted so fast? 6. Was there any way that Moshe the Beadle could’ve made his story more believable? How?

Poem: “You Will Forget” Chenerai Jove How do shared experiences of hardship connect communities or impede their creation?

SSR Chapter Three JOURNAL

" In Jewish tradition, the word listen, listen, listen is frequently used. The Bible is full of the word listen, listen Israel, listen Moses, listen Abraham, listen. The Jew in me that says I must listen to others." — From Elie Wiesel PRACTICE "LISTENING" TO WHAT WIESEL IS SAYING.
13
Journal Response: Chapter 3 Journal: Choose 2-3 points to respond to. Respond honestly. Describe what you observe. How has this section affected you? What were you thinking about while reading? What is a question that you have? What do you associate this to? Can you make a personal connection? Turn one of Wiesel's paragraphs of prose into a poem. Write about a quotation that is particularly effective. Observe how he conveys his experience.
