Characteristics of Good Mental & Emotional Health You can accept the fact that situations will not always go your way or the planned way. You set and achieve attainable goals You understand and cope with feelings in healthy ways. You express your feelings through your words and creative outlets.

Expressing Anxiety Anxiety ▫A state of uneasiness, usually associated with a future uncertainty When anxiety builds up, it can interfere with normal and necessary functions like sleeping and eating. ▫Examples… A heightened state of anxiety produces panic ▫Which is a feeling of sudden intense fear.

Dealing with Emotions Empathy- ability to imagine and understand how someone else feels. Defense mechanisms- Mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful situations. ▫Ex: Repression, regression, denial, projection, suppression, rationalization, compensation.

Managing Anger Do something to relax- Listen to music, read a book… Channel you energy in a different direction- Take a walk, go for a bike ride, play the piano, write down your feelings in a daily journal. Talk with someone you trust- Sharing your thoughts and feelings may help your situation.

What is Stress Stress is a normal reaction to certain situations or events in your life. ▫The body’s response to change What do you stress about? Stressor Anything that causes stress

Your Response to Stress Part of the fight-or-flight response is the body’s production of adrenaline. ▫A hormone that gives the body extra energy.

Too much stress can lead to: ▫Physical Health: Headaches, digestive problems, high BP, Immune System breaks down and can no longer fight infections well. ▫Mental/Emotional: Feeling anxious, moody, irritable. ▫Social Health: Yell at others, withdraw, back off…

Coping with a Loss Grief ▫The sorrow caused by the loss of a loved one. This can be a family member, friend, or even a pet. Grief lasts depending on each individual person May be a day or a few years… Movie Example: P.S. I Love You

Coping Strategies Ways of dealing with the sense of loss people feel at the death of someone close. ▫Confront feelings head on– Being sad and/or crying is completely normal. ▫Do NOT keep emotions bottled up. ▫Share with others ▫Religious traditions may help some cope with the loss of a loved one.
