Athens and Sparta Athens was ruled by a type of government called an Democracy. They also had a strong Navy. They became very wealthy during the “Golden Age” Colonies paid their navy for protection. Sparta had a strong military and once joined with Athens to defeat the Persians but eventually became jealous of Athens’ power and defeated them as well.
