Welcome to 8th Grade General Science. Science this year will prepare you for the Science PSSA – The areas we will study include: The Nature of Science – systems, patterns, safety, equipment, tools, scientific method, properties, relationships, organizationThe Nature of Science – systems, patterns, safety, equipment, tools, scientific method, properties, relationships, organization –Problem solve using the Scientific Method –Study organizational patterns, how scientists study natural world. –Introduced to laboratory equipment, develop laboratory skills. –Laboratory experiments, write reports, analyze and critique scientific information –Investigate the basic Structures of Matter, Atoms, Elements, and how matter interacts together

Environmental Chemistry – studies of Freshwater Quality (ground and surface water):Environmental Chemistry – studies of Freshwater Quality (ground and surface water): –Biological factors – macroinvertebrates, habitats, aquatic organisms –Physical factors – erosion, man-made structures, forestry –Chemical Factors – point & non-point source pollution, water sampling –Also - Laws & Regulations, Watersheds, and Wetlands. –Also - Laws & Regulations, Watersheds, and Wetlands. Projects will be assigned throughout the year to apply the concepts learned in science.

Classroom Expectations Come to class prepared. Bring science materials; composition notebook, binder, highlighter, colored pencils, paper(lined, white), pencil(#2) and/or pen(blue or black), unless told otherwise. Please do not place your belongs on shelves or counters. Classwork assignments are to complete in class! May need to finish for homework. Procedures – Composition Notebook and Binder Must maintain a composition notebook record notes and labs keep handouts and worksheets In addition a 1" plastic binder These materials are very important as you will use them to study for assessments/tests Outline notes/study guide will be given at the beginning of each unit, contains the content to study

Procedures – Lab Reports Experiments will be completed as a written report in science journal. Experiments will be completed as a written report in science journal. If you are absent for the experiment, you need to get the information/data from group members. At times you will be required to type a formal lab report and will need the information from your journal. YOU MUST dress appropriately on days we conduct experiments. No sandals, baggy shirts/pants, or sweatshirts should be worn. Anyone with long hair needs to pull it back.

Procedures - Homework This is a required part of your grade. This is a required part of your grade. Homework is always due the next day, unless otherwise noted. Late Homework If you forgot to bring your assignment to class, you need to drop it off on your way to lunch or after school. If you forgot to complete it, turn it in the next day for half credit. Remember, if you complete all homework you can make and use a hint card for tests.

Procedures - Absences A summary of the day's lesson will be recorded in a notebook and kept on the counter on the side of the room. Worksheets handed out will be placed in a hanging file with your name on it. Be sure to check on the next day and take your copy of the worksheet. This is your responsibility! Procedures – Long term Assignments You will be given several projects/reports required to work on at home. Timeline of due dates will be given. Timeline of due dates will be given.
