2 Project Goals Increase size of uplink pipes Finish upgrade of residence halls to switched 10Mbs to per pillow (‘dorm’) Upgrade office and classroom ports to switched 10/100 (‘office’) Add more ports in public areas

4 ‘Dorm’ Upgrades Upgrade software on existing units –Load 4.0 boot and run code Reconfigure management network Equipment replacement in 3 areas –Patriots Village - 3 & 9 –Commonwealth and Dominion –Student Apartments Each independent ‘mini project’

5 ‘Office’ Upgrades Common ‘Master’ Plan for All Three –Announce Upgrades starting –Meet with technical contacts –Open meeting with all building occupants –Define schedule for implementation –Install equipment –Management would prefer upgrading during normal working hours

6 ‘Office’ Upgrades – By building: Announce Upgrades –Now you know… Meet with technical contacts –Define all users in building –Identify any special needs –Review building upgrade plan –Set tentative dates for installation

7 ‘Office’ Upgrades – By building: Open meeting with all occupants –Confirm all users in building –Review identified special needs –Review building upgrade plan –Select dates for installation Define Schedule for Implementation –Define and post final Implementation Schedule Install Equipment –Post reminders week before –Install equipment

8 Building Overview - Enterprise Enterprise Hall –Total of three networks Backbone SOM Classroom –Each network already properly defined No IP changes –Available rack space in TSE Can do floor by floor

9 Building Overview – JC/Fenwick Johnson Center & Fenwick Library –Total of six networks BackboneAdmissions LibraryAIL Johnson LabsS&T I Labs –Each network already properly defined No IP changes –Available rack space in TSE Can do floor by floor (or closet by closet)

10 Building Overview - Robinson Robinson Hall –Total of three networks Backbone Robinson Labs DoIIIT –Backbone network ‘a real mess’ Almost all IPs must change (‘.12-.15) Netmask and router must change (‘.12.1) –No rack space available in TSEs Robinson A - must do entire building at once Robinson B - Slightly more flexible Harris Theatre - equipment change can wait

11 Building Specifics - Robinson Three Phase Backbone Transition 1.Sweep through building changing IPs Convert as many devices as possible to DHCP Move all statics to ‘.14 (B) and ‘.15(A) networks UCIS & department keep static lists 2.Change Backbone Address Change address on router and DHCP server Change netmask and router on static list 3.Upgrade closet equipment Robinson A – all floors out until upgraded Robinson B – each floor will work until upgraded Harris Theatre – will work until upgraded

12 Robinson Upgrade Plan – tentative 1. Change address on router 2. Change DHCP server 3. Start changing netmask & router on static addresses from list Robinson B, Harris, Robinson A 4. At same time, start upgrading equipment by closet a.1A, 2A, 3A, 4A b.3B, 4B, 2B, 1B c.Harris

13 Phase 2 ‘Office’ Summary Happening this Summer Schedule to be determined by users Enterprise, Johnson, Fenwick –No address changes required –Schedule flexible to closet level Robinson Hall –IP information must change –Must complete all once started –Order of upgrades pretty much fixed
