Vocabulary – Phrases These are the vocabulary words for this lesson. Read through carefully and print out if possible. Don't be overwhelmed. The information will be repeated throughout the module, and there will be practice exercises.

Vocabulary – Phrases phrase - a group of words without a subject and predicate. preposition - a word that shows position: in, at, over, during, from, to, and so on. prepositional phrase - a group of words that starts with a preposition: in the closet, over the hill.

Vocabulary – Phrases -ing words - a word ending in -ing which does not have a helping verb: singing, driving, roaming. The - ing verb is called a participle and is part of a verb: is singing, are driving, would be roaming. When used as a noun, an -ing word is called a gerund: Running is good exercise. -ing phrase - word group that begins with an -ing word: climbing the mountain.

Vocabulary – Phrases infinitive - the to form of the verb: to give, to prepare, to solve. These are not verbs and cannot be the predicate of a sentence. infinitive phrase - a group of words beginning with an infinitive: to be a nurse, to sing a song. appositive phrase - a group of words that names or further describes a noun or pronoun: the dress in the store, the man with the hat.
