2 Thirty-One Years of Growth American Chronic Pain Association

3  Since 1980 the American Chronic Pain Association has provided help and hope to those suffering from chronic pain.  The ACPA is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization with peer support groups.  We are nonprofessionals so we do not provide therapy or medical treatment.  We do not offer a cure; we do offer support and education in positive and constructive methods for dealing with pain.

4 American Chronic Pain Association  To facilitate peer support and education for individuals with chronic pain and their families so that these individuals may live more fully in spite of their pain.  To raise awareness among the health care community, policy makers, and the public at large about issues of living with chronic pain. 6 What is Chronic Pain?  Pain is a major health issue.  The number one cause of adult disability in the US; -Prevalence of chronic pain in the general population is estimated at 116 million people (IOM, Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research, 2011)

7 What is Chronic Pain? -Pain costs an estimated $560 to $635 billion annually in lost workdays, medical expenses, and other benefit costs. (IOM, Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research, 2011) Pain is a major economic issue.

8 What is Chronic Pain?  Chronic pain is a process that turns the sufferer from a person to a patient.  ACPA helps them to move from patient to person.

9 What is Chronic Pain?  Chronic pain is pain that:  3 months or more  goes on for months or years due to a chronic condition.  It also can interfere with your quality of life making simple tasks impossible.  The pain may not be constant but disrupts daily life.

10 Pain Can Be Confusing  Many wonder:  Is this really pain?  My injury has healed. Why do I still hurt?  How did I get it?  Am I just imagining it?  How can I explain it to my doctor?

11 Pain Can Be Confusing  Medical miracles are preformed everyday.  Our expectation is that medicine can eliminate pain with a pill or simple procedure.

12 Pain Can Be Confusing Keep in mind that pain is invisible and cannot be seen or measured.

13 Pain Can Be Confusing  Person with pain is willing to do anything if he or she believes it will reduce or end the pain.  Fear of the pain is the most controlling factor.

14 Health Care Professionals  Not trained in pain management.  Lack the knowledge and time to help people manage pain from day to day.  Don’t like to treat people with pain because they don’t respond and often take too much time.  So we hear “Learn to live with it.”

16 Learn to live with it.  Validation of the pain is key to taking the first step in moving from patient to person.  When pain is long term, it consumes us and becomes our identity.

41 Learning to Live With It STEP 1: Accept the Pain Learn all you can about your physical condition. Understand that there may be no current cure and accept that you will need to deal with the fact of pain in your life. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

43 Learning to Live With It STEP 2: Get Involved Take an active role in your own recovery. Follow your doctor's advice and ask what you can do to move from a passive role into one of partnership in your own health care. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

44 Learning to Live With It STEP 3: Learn to Set Priorities Look beyond your pain to the things that are important in your life. List the things that you would like to do. Setting priorities can help you find a starting point to lead you back into a more active life. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

45 Learning to Live With It STEP 4: Set Realistic Goals We all walk before we run. Set goals that are within your power to accomplish or break a larger goal down into manageable steps. And take time to enjoy your successes. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

46 Learning to Live With It STEP 5: Know Your Basic Rights We all have basic rights. Among these are the right to be treated with respect, to say no without guilt, to do less than humanly possible, to make mistakes, and to not need to justify your decisions, with words or pain. 47 Learning to Live With It The right to say "no" and not feel guilty. The right to ask for information. The right to feel good about yourself. The right to ask for help or assistance. The right to disagree. The right to ask "why?" The right to be listened to and taken seriously when expressing your feelings. Your Basic Rights The right to act in a way that promotes your dignity and self respect. The right to be treated with respect. The right to make mistakes. The right to do less than you are humanly capable of doing. The right to change your mind. The right to ask for what you want. The right to take time to slow down and think before you respond. The right to feel that you don't have to explain everything you do and think.

48 Learning to Live With It STEP 6: Recognize Emotions Our bodies and minds are one. Emotions directly affect physical well being. By acknowledging and dealing with your feelings, you can reduce stress and decrease the pain you feel. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

49 Learning to Live With It STEP 7: Learn to Relax Pain increases in times of stress. Relaxation exercises are one way of reclaiming control of your body. Deep breathing, visualization, and other relaxation techniques can help you to better manage the pain you live with. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

51 Learning to Live With It STEP 8: Exercise Most people with chronic pain fear exercise. But unused muscles feel more pain than toned flexible ones. With your doctor, identify a modest exercise program that you can do safely. As you build strength, your pain can decrease. You'll feel better about yourself, too. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

52 Learning to Live With It STEP 9: See the Total Picture As you learn to set priorities, reach goals, assert your basic rights, deal with your feelings, relax, and regain control of your body, you will see that pain does not need to be the center of your life. You can choose to focus on your abilities, not your disabilities. You will grow stronger in your belief that you can live a normal life in spite of chronic pain. Ten Steps from Patient to Person

53 Learning to Live With It STEP 10: Reach Out It is estimated that one person in three suffers with some form of chronic pain. Once you have begun to find ways to manage your chronic pain problem, reach out and share what you know. Living with chronic pain is an ongoing learning experience.
