2. Bill of Rights 1 st 10 amendments to the US Constitution 1 st Amendment- Freedom of Speech, Religion, Assembly, Petition, Press 2 nd Amendment- right to bear arms 3 rd Amendment- no quartering (housing) troops 4 th Amendment- no illegal search and seizure, must obtain warrant

3. 5th Amendment-due process of law: indictment (officially charged with a crime); no double jeopardy (cannot be tried for the same crime twice); cannot be forced to testify when testimony incriminates ones’ self- “I plead the 5 th ” 6 th Amendment- trial by jury- criminal case; right to a speedy, public trial 7 th Amendment- trial by jury- civil case (involving money rather than jail) 8 th Amendment- no cruel of unusual punishment 9 th Amendment- people have other rights not listed in the Constitution 10 th Amendment- states have other rights not listed in the Constitution; prevented the government from encroaching on rights of states

4. Reconstruction Amendments 13 th Amendment- set slaves free; slaves could move and live anywhere they wanted. 14 th Amendment- gave citizenship to ex-slaves and free African Americans; all citizens were now considered equal before the law; this amendment reversed the Dred Scott v Sandford 15 th Amendment- gave right to vote to all African American males; expanded Democracy
