Background Colonoscopy is a common procedure. Much written about what to expect during the procedure, and adverse clinical events. Lack of information regarding experience post colonoscopy.

Methods Qualitative approach taken. Each patient sent letter with appointment for colonoscopy. (25 in total recruited.) Consent obtained by admitting nurse. Patients with IBD or cancer diagnosed on colonoscopy were excluded.

Data collection Patients contacted the day following their colonoscopy by telephone. Consent re-affirmed. Patients asked about issues such as abdo pain, drowsiness, bowel and bladder function, sleep patterns. All conversations recorded.

Results Main themes: Abdominal pain- short lasting. Mild bowel disturbances. Mild tiredness.

Conclusion Patients continue to experience a degree of abdominal pain post colonoscopy. Information should be given to patents on discharge.
