5
The Hip (Posterior) Name Origin Insertion Primary Action
Gluteus Medius Ilium Proximal Femur Abducts thigh and stedies pelvis when walking Gluteus Maxmus Sacrum and Ilium Extends hip (so it is straight with the pelvis)
6
Pelvis/Thigh (Anterior)
Muscle Origin Insertion Primary Action Iliopsoas Ilium and lumbar vertebra Femur (lesser trochanter) Flexes hip Sartorius Ilium Proximal Tibia Flexes thigh on hip Adductor Muscles Pelvis Proximal Femur Adduct Thigh
7
Hamstring Muscles Name Origin Insertion Primary Action Semitendinosus
Ischial Tuberosity Proximal Tibia Flexes knee and Extends hip Semimembranosus Biceps Femoris The Hamstring muscles make up much of the posterior thigh, as well as the adductor muscles.

Quadriceps Group Anterior Thigh
Name Origin Insertion Primary Action Vastus Medialis Femur Tibial Tuberosity via patellar ligament Extend knee Vastus lateralis Rectus Femoris Pelvis Extend knee and flexes hip on thigh
11
Leg Name Origin Insertion Primary Action Gastroncnemius Soleus
Distal Femur Calcaneus Plantar flexes foot and flexes knee Soleus Proximal tibia and fibula Plantar flexes foot Tibialis Anterior Proximal tibia First cineform and first metatarsal Dorsiflexes and inverts foot Extensor digitorum Longus Proximal tibia and radius Distal toes (2-5) Extends toes and dorsiflexes foot Fibularis Muscles Fibula Metatarsals of foot Plantar flex and evert foot
