This is a Cuirass. This body armor protects the shoulders, chest, and abdomen. Some even went down farther to protect the upper thigh. Most were made of a material called Lamellar. “Lamellar armor consists of hundreds of small rectangular iron, leather, or bronze plates (scales or lamellae) which are pierced in various locations and laced together into horizontal rows to the proper length needed to construct a particular armor item” (Lamellar Armor, Wikeedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamellar_armour ).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamellar_armour This is your Helmet. It is important. The helmet is made of Bronze and has a horsetail crest at the top. Most armies of antquity had helmets of this nature. The helmet protected its wearer from blows to the head from spears, swords, and arrows. The higher your rank in the army, the more decorative your crest. This is your most important piece of armor. It is called a Hoplon and is where we Hoplites get our name. The large shiled is, “approximately three feet (90 centimeters) in diameter, made of composite wood and bronze,.” (Hoplon, Encyclopedia Britanica, http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/271579/hopl on ) The design on the front would change by clan or town. Ancient Greeks fight in what is called a phalanx where men stand shoulder to shoulder. The shield is important because it protects your left and the right of the man to your left. This make an inpenatrable wall of shields and is why we Spartans are the envy of the Greek World. http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/271579/hopl on Next
