Vasi Levski is the most honored Bulgarian revolutionary and a national hero.

Birth Place Levski`s real name was Vasil Ivanov Kunchev. He was born on 18 July [6 July] 1837 in the town of Karlovo.

Family Levski's parents were Ivan Kunchev and Gina Kuncheva. He also had two younger brothers, Hristo and Petar, and an older sister, Yana.

Early life Levski began his education at a school in Karlovo. In 1855, his uncle Vasil – archimandrite and envoy of the Hilandar monastery – took him as an apprentice.

First steps in the revolutionary work It wasn’t too long, until Levski realized that the monk`s life wasn’t for him. So in the spring of 1862 he left for the Serbian capit Belgrade.

There he joined the First Bulgarian Legion.

Work in Romania Levski finished his education in the Legion and left for Romania, where he developed his revolutionary plans. There he worked with other fighters for freedom like Hristo Botev and Luben Karavelov.

Internal Revolutionary Organisation Vasil Levski spent more than three years establishing a wide network of secret committees in Bulgarian cities and villages called Internal Revolutionary Organisation.

Capture Levski was finally captured on the morning of 27.12.1872. nearby the village inn in Kakrina

The last days Levski was sent to Sofia on 4 January, where he was taken to trial.

The Execution The sentence was carried out on 18 February 1873 in Sofia.

Personal items Although the location of Levski`s grave has not been determined, some of his hair is on exhibit at the National Museum of Military History.
