Factors and Prime Numbers When two or more numbers are multiplied to give a certain product, each number is called a factor of the product. The numbers 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 are all factors of 16. A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 that has no whole number factors other than 1 and itself. Whole numbers greater than 1 that are not prime numbers are called composite numbers.
