MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 1 MICE CM 15 wrap-up Collaboration meeting 8-11 June 2006 at Fermilab complete review of the project. thanks to Alan Bross, Malcolm Ellis, Jean-Sebastien Graulich and Jim Norem for organisation of the meeting and agenda and Dinner! Wrap up was much helped by ‘what can go wrong’ session… self evaluation is very efficient! should follow-up! Please comment and complete as I go along!

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 2 STEP I: 15 September 2007 = 460 days away! STEP II: soon after PHASE I MAIN GOAL of meeting: Understand where we stand in our preparations for Steps I and II. -- beam line: target, optics, tuning and correction abilities, diffuser -- TOF, Cherenkov1, EMCAL (size of shield&TOF2&EMCAL must be decided) -- tracker -- spectrometer solenoid -- installation and cabling -- controls and monitoring -- trigger, DAQ and event processing -- software: upstream and downstream particle ID, reconstruction of tracks -- analysis: form run plan, reconstruction of « beam», emittance, transmission

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 3 Target Clearly the highest risk issue in MICE review tomorrow Much progress and growing team! The depth of dip will be carefully written on data stream… Precious for understanding of rates, etc.. Issues raised: -- heating problem when exciting to 40A (instead of presently 5 A) ==> personnally believe that redesign may be necessary to include more-than-adequate cooling system -- avoid that failure leads to target stuck in beam! + should have a fool-proof indicator that target is in beam position. Not obvious that test in October will be able to be performed with final system. How far from it will it be? Will it address enough critical issues?
4
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 4 Beam Line and Optics Want to see the full performance matrix: Still needed before in-hall final design and construction begins and a few more features: correctors, (can we adjust five parameters with four magnets?) collimators, are they needed for the small emittance beam? diagnostics (any?) review tomorrow much progress in engineering
5
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 5 CKOV1 Louvain-Mississipi collaboration Design will allow improved separation between muons and pions in the high momentum range. two units needed. (200-260 and 260-365) yes/no but also pulse height? beam test at fermilab this summer, will be ready for MICE start-up.
6
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 6 TOF Ennoying questions: TOF2 said to be mid-2008. Can this be brought forward? what will happen with x-ray radiation when we run with RF? Issue: particles crossing material in the downstream end of the spectrometer this is a beam of 100-300 MeV/c, all generated with 4T field in spectrometer. How about the size of the hole in the shielding Preparations of TOF0 test on-going (Milano-Pavia) double layer allows measurement of resolution, meast is of this is the main aim of the test
7
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 7 EMCAL fully Active Scintillator upgraded simulations show much better performance eff 99.90% -> rejecting 97.7% wrt Osaka: to be verified for the whole matrix and for the non-flip mode. SIZE is the matter now! New design Intense preparation in Roma3 for the testbeam in July
8
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 8 Tracker excellent review passed in April ! KEK beam results: alignment to a few tens of microns very precise metrology! (see how pitch was measured! -->) still some to be understood (chi2?) residuals in # channels channel number Production of final tracker 1.QA will be very careful to avoid misalignment (loss of light) and channel garbling that occured previously: planning: QA verified on earlier stations 5th station starting mid-august evaluation by mid september then start production
9
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 9 Spectrometer Solenoid conductor purchased and accepted. Final vendor selection nearly complete Procurement contract expected to be placed before the end of June --> delivery expected end-summer 2007. (how about second solenoid?)
10
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 10 DAQ and monitoring two connected issues Controls and Monitoring: Basic system with EPICS. The use of Hytec 9010 IOC and IP modules is recommended for most applications. Two such IOC systems already procured for target (sheffield) and for H2 system (at RAL) More complex systems may require VME interface DAQ Will acquire the particle-generated signals and data. global « spill trigger » + still needs a particle-based trigger (supp. TOF0+TOF1) Based on ALICE software DATE will record at every spill the system data required for analysis (list should be established of a minimum sufficient set of such data) Final electronics choices and DAQ modules will be proposed at RAL meeting in october
11
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 11 AFC module Cryocoolers GM or PT???? that is the question. We will for sure have a mixed system since tracker cryo uses GM and spectrometer solenoid uses PT. Any advantage in unification? Sensitivity to magnetic field to be tested/understood for both. Beautiful field calculations by H. Whitt Absorbers Situation was very advanced in 2004 -- much slowed down by interruption of ICAR funding a number of issues remain (i.e. QA of production windows, for instance) … and production of course. A problem to be solved LH2 Safety & HAZOP response to safety document will be finished well before next CMPB! HAZOP document (impressive) almost final 22 recommandations! which to implement? working group-->collab --> TB review. what will be the users interface? (only instructions on how to respond to alarms and phone experts?)
12
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 12 G-10 Support Absorber & Pipes Mini In-Flange 30 Pin Feedthrough Tee L-H2 IN G-H2 OUT He/N2 OUT He/N2 IN Ishimoto slight changes and improvements to the design. <-- Instrumentation, feedthroughs.. being worked out. Indication of cooling time to be 57 h -- better solution for convection to be found New development of two phase hyperfluid He cooling, big jump in conductivity (>10 orders of magnitude)
13
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 13 RF cavities 200 MHz cavity powered and first measurements made, including effect of stray magnetic field (multipactor!) measurements of background rates are about to begin B=0 or stray field (up to 1.25 T). will constitute precious normalization for simulations (the level of V at which we run will be determined by RF power limit or Bkg hit limit whichever is smallest) 5 ports have been foeressn to identify electron sources
14
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 14 RF power LBNL: Two “4MW” + three “300kW” systems shipped to DL Strip down and rebuild as a test stand CERN: Two “3MW” systems available at CERN Request to CERN to refurbish DL/RAL: New B4616 tubes (1 working LBNL tube) New TH116 tube bases (purchase in time) New kW power supplies (Dressler) MICE should have 8MW @ 201 MHz available by 2008 given possibility to run with L.N2 re-acceleration by ~34 MV should be available from two RFCC modules aim at having it all working by end of 2007
15
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 15 Physics and analysis aligment of magnetic axis of exeriment electric field (Li): measurement of pulse amplitude vs time + phase for each cavity master clock? LH2 thickness (measurement of absorber warm shape vs pressure) LH2 density from pressure and temperature measurements OK OK (<310 -3 ) for L. H2 and most solids. Marginal or difficult for LiH and He channel transmission measurement (Marco Apollonio) --> trigger must be based on TOF0 + TOFI (not TOFII) so that T= muons in tracker 2/ muons in tracker 1 can be measured. PID performance (Sandström) much improvement must be turned into a user friendly package before RS flies away! tuning on data? Measurement of longitudinal emittance (Rogers) issues with minimizing the effect of propagation of tracker precision measurement of tracker resolution will be very important (step III) Very important to keep all acceptance. still needed; run plan + note on TOF2 need Software is in great progress… Interface with engineering reference system to be envisaged (so that we simulate what is built) (or at least that we think that we simulate what we think is built)

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 18 PHASE II discussion main issue: accelerator physics case for MICE PHASEII. Q: why do we test study II cooling cell rather than the (simpler one) of Study Iia, or the ISS recommended one or the more powerful one of Muons Inc..? A1: The MICE hardware is very mature and ready to construct and test -- in fact it is the only one in that state, other possibilities (such as study IIa,b, or ISS recommended) a re not studied and designed quite yet. A2: Equipment that MICE builds is not only useful to test Study II cooling channel, it (in particular AFC module) has flexibility for many other optics or absorber materials, and MICE is precise enough to evaluate small expected (and unexpected) differences between them. A3: The RF modules are absolutely essential in demonstrating the fact that beam can be reaccelerated, in all cooling systems envisaged.

MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 19 or: of MICE and MANX MANX LOI was submitted in may 2006 to Fermilab MANX is a cooling system based on a helicoidal focusing channel a very challenging magnet (3-5m long SC) around L.He. absorbers. Claim of 500% cooling (vs 10% for MICE) incl. long. emittance reduction. It is suggested that MANX can eventually be tested in the RAL muon beam, using the spectrometers and diagnostics of MICE Caveats: -- the matching of all this has not been completely demonstrated -- the gauge ‘how much beam is cooled’ may not be the same between MANX LOI and MICE -- re-acceleration of muons after such cooling requires matching to RF cavity modules such as those of MICE -- not demonstrated either -- MICE is an approved experiment (this was hard enough!) and will be completed as proposed Given these caveats, we certainly support MANX and wish it success, as a possible follow-up on MICE. Looking forward to fruitful collaboration « PHASE III: »

27
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 27 Aspirational MICE Schedule now (reasonably optimistic as always) 15 September 2007 NB: picture does not include target, beam line, hall infrastructure, electronics, DAQ, shifters etc… ! STEP I 15 November 2007 STEP III: Winter 2008 STEP II STEP IV Fall 2008 STEP V Spring 2009 STEP VI Fall 2009
28
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 28 A few Uncertainties (or risks) as I see them (please complete!) 1. Will target be ready and operating? 2. Will PSI solenoid resurrect? 2. Will EMCAL be ready on 15 september 2007? 3. Will TOF2 be ready end 2007? 4. Will MICE UK Phase II bid be approved? 5. Will a solution be found to finish absorber body and windows R&D and construction? 6. Will Harbin funding request come through? etc… How will MICE survive when Chris and Rikard have finished their thesis? How will we man/woman the shifts? These will be three years of intense activity: are there going to be enough of us?
29
MICE CM15 wrap-up Alain Blondel 11 June 2006 29 CONCLUSIONS 1. This has been an extremely sucessful meeting, excellent and well prepared talks described lots of work 2. so much is happening in MICE! 3. ***460 days*** to data taking 4.
