Transportation Tuesday TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY SAVE YOUR CHILD’S LIFE TODAY TEACH THEM HOW TO BE A SAFE PEDESTRIAN TAKE A WALK ON THE SAFE SIDE
2
Transportation Tuesday IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO LEARN 1-4 years : protect your child - never let the child near a road alone (even with another child). They cannot cope with traffic. When you go out, make sure they walk on the inside of the pavement - hold their hand. 5-6 years : teach the basics - when you are walking, talk about what you are doing and why. Start to teach : STOP - LOOK - LISTEN. Children this age still have no judgement skills. 7-9 years : understanding and practice - make sure they know the basics of road safety and watch as they practice crossing roads alone. Children learn by example - set a good example yourself. 10 - 15 years : independence - teach them how to judge speed and distance and how to find a safe gap to cross. Ensure they think for themselves and don’t blindly follow their friends across the road.

Transportation Tuesday ROAD SAFETY FOR GROWN UPS stay alert - don’t get so lost in conversation or thought that you don’t notice the traffic use your eyes and ears - if you are wearing headphones keep the volume low so you can hear the traffic look ALL ways, not just both ways - check behind and beside you for vehicles turning or coming out of side streets and alleys never assume the driver will stop - try to make eye contact remember there are blind spots never walk behind a vehicle that is reversing if there is no pavement, walk facing the traffic - make sure you see and be seen be visible at night - walk where the street lights help and wear bright clothes or carry a flash light we all know about drunk driving … alcohol and drugs can impair your judgement for walking too
