discover – SRU client enables open repository IRISS Learning Exchange Open Search IRISS achieved open licence status for enough of their teaching and learning resources to offer an open web interface to their repository Built on our open source SRU client; Open Search is now open sourced too (see Ian Watson’s soapbox presentation) Jorum are looking at building on this approach for JorumOpen Various universities are using this to enable their institutional repositories to manage behind-the-wall learning resources and openly available research outputs. Let’s have a look: http://www.iriss.ac.uk/openlx/ http://www.iriss.ac.uk/openlx/

Support for SRU allows institutions to embed their repository in their VLE Keele University are currently implementing the Blackboard Enterprise (ex-WebCT) intraLibrary PowerLink They will be rolling out to academics in time for the next semester They are using intraLibrary to manage their digitised copyright materials collection, to produce reports for the Copyright Licensing Authority, and to open these resources to academics for embedding directly into Blackboard without having to log into the repository. Oxford Brookes and several others are also looking at using the PowerLink to allow embedding of research papers and LOs in courses. Coming soon: Moodle and Blackboard Building Block integration.

Conclusions Digital Repositories –integrate with your existing tools –offer reliable single source access –are easy to search (metadata/classification) –encourage mashups, etc. Open standards –support new uses with existing tools –put power in the hands of the user –are the basis for open access
