Lesson 19 – 1st Challenge 20:1-8 Jesus’ question was re: John’s baptism v. 4 The Jews pondered their “options” vv. 5-6 No matter which answer they chose, there were consequences they did not want They refused to answer…so did Jesus vv. 7-8

Lesson 19 – Another Parable 20:9-18 Parable Of The Vine-growers Jesus asked the Jews, “What would happen to these vine-growers?” vv. 15b-16a The Jews understood He was applying the teaching to them…they replied “May it not be!” v. 16b

Lesson 19 – Another Parable 20:9-18 Parable Of The Vine-growers Jesus quotes the Scripture re: the “rejected stone becoming the Chief Cornerstone and man’s reaction to His authority vv. 17-18 cp. Psa 118:22

Lesson 19 – 2nd Challenge 20:19-26 Following this parable, the Jews want to “lay hands” (arrest) Jesus…however, they can’t because of the people v. 19 They send out spies who feigned righteousness in order to catch Jesus in His words, deliver Him to the Romans v. 20

Lesson 19 – 2nd Challenge 20:19-26 They “butter Jesus up”…question Him on the “lawfulness” of Jews paying taxes to Caesar vv. 21-22 Jesus was not fooled…He was fully aware of their intentions, “trickery” v. 23 cp. Jn 2:24-25

Lesson 19 – 3rd Challenge 20:27-40 The Sadducees approach Jesus next with an “unanswerable dilemma” The hypocrisy was obvious …they did not even believe in the basic premise of this “dilemma” they present Jesus v. 27

Lesson 19 – 3rd Challenge 20:27-40 They correctly quote Moses v. 28 Deut 25 Their “dilemma” – vv. 29-37 A woman’s husband died…she married his brother…he also died…she went through all 6 of her husband’s brothers…at last, she died “In the resurrection” – whose wife is she???

Lesson 19 – 3rd Challenge 20:27-40 Jesus responds re: the nature of those in the resurrection vv. 34-38 We will be as the angels…no marriage These Jews were “mistaken, not knowing the Scripture nor the power of God”…they had obviously not read cp. Mt 22:29, 31

Lesson 19 – 3rd Challenge 20:27-40 Some of the scribes were impressed with how He dealt with the Sadducees v. 39 The Sadducees, however, lost their courage to ask Jesus anything more in public v. 40

Lesson 19 – A Question… 20:41-44 Jesus appears to keep the “theme” going This time, He is the one who has a question “How is the Christ David’s Son? Does not David call Him, ‘Lord?’” cp. Psa 110:1 He was unlike them…His motivation was not impure or trying to be “tricky” cp. v. 23

Lesson 19 – Instructions 20:45-47 Jesus cautions His 12 disciples re: the hypocrisy of the Jews following all these exchanges on that Tuesday in Jerusalem “Beware of their pretense” vv. 46-47a They’ll receive the “greater condemnation” v. 47b cp. Mt 23:1-36 “8 Woes”
