2 What is a kiwi? The kiwi is a small oval shaped fruit It has brown hairy skin The flesh (inside) of the fruit is bright green in color The fruit has a sweet, almost citrus taste

3 Origins The kiwi is a fruit that originated in China’s Yangtze River Valley It was brought over to New Zealand in 1906, and it was first known as the “Chinese gooseberry” The fruit strongly resembled the kiwi bird, that was native to New Zealand, thus the origin of the name of the fruit

4 California Kiwis Since 1960, kiwis have been a major commercial crop in California The fruit grows on thick woody vines with large leaves The vine begins to flower in May, but does not produce ripe fruit until late October or early November

5 Types of kiwi Hayward most common type of kiwi, typically just labeled “kiwi fruit” in food stores Gold Has smooth, bronze colored skin, with a point at the end Has mustard colored flesh When very ripe it has a custard-like taste Hardy Very small, almost the size of a grape Entire fruit can be eaten, including the skin

6 Benefits of kiwis Great source of vitamin C A serving of kiwi gives twice the amount of vitamin C as an orange! Good source of fiber more than a serving of bran flakes in fact! Significant source of potassium Also supplies folate and magnesium Vitamin E is also found in kiwi this one of the few low fat and low calorie sources Contains lutein which reduces the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration of the eyes

8 How to eat a kiwi “scoop and scrape” method simply cut the kiwi in half and use a spoon to scrape out the flesh! Can simply peel off the skin and slice! Try making “kiwisauce” instead of applesauce! Try kiwi’s on top of waffles, pancakes, breakfast breads, yogurt, salads, cottage cheese, serve with meats such as pork, beef, or chicken
