2 History of Palm OS  The Palm OS was originally developed by Jeff Hawkins  Palm OS was bought by U.S. Robotics Corporation  Later bought by 3Com  In 2000, Palm became a privately owned company

3 Previous Palm OS  Palm OS 1.0  The first Palm OS  Premiered on the first Palm Pilots (1000 and 5000 edition)  Allowed user to either write or the virtual keyboard  The Graffiti handwriting recognition system interpreted what the user wrote on the screen  Allowed the user to synchronize the pilot to a computer

4 Previous Palm OS  Palm OS 2.0  Added TCP/IP network, network HotSync, and a backlight  Palm 3.0  Introduced with the Palm III series  Added infrared (IrDA, exchanges information over infrared light. Essentially the beginnings of wifi) and an enhanced font software  Later introduced their 8-bit software in Palm OS 3.5  Palm eventually released their first internet upgrade to allow the user to access their email and a web browser.

5 Previous Palm OS  Palm OS 4.0  Premiered on the Palm m500 Series  Allows the first SD card insert and a USB connection  The software allows the user to connect to the internet  Introduces sound, vibration, LED blinking, a 16-bit system, and graffiti 2  First OS with a fully successful Simplified Chinese Support

11 Market Share and Growth  April 28, 2010 – HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion  HP will use the Palm software for their smartphones and Netbooks  HP will try to compete with Apple, Microsoft, and Google in the 3G and 4G smartphone market  Palm has strayed for their original simple PDA’s and have moved onto smartphones which still utilize their PDA software and background

12 Hardware Devices & Manufactures  The two main Palm devices on the market are the:  Palm Pixi  Available for Sprint  $49.99  Pixi Plus  Available for Verizon and AT&T  Currently not available  Palm Pre - $149.99  Available for Sprint  Palm Pre Plus – Available for Verizon and AT&T  $49.99  Original device was the Palm 1000 and the Palm Pilot  Palm Centro is one of their current smartphones  Palm manufactures the majority of their devices
