Frightening Comment/ImageWhy it’s Frightening “The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them” (Edwards 79) Edwards tells readers that they are damned for eternity and states that once they die this is their ultimate punishment “that lake of burning brimstone, is extended abroad under you.” (Edwards 80) The preachers signifies that the church members are on the verge of a horrible fate and the slightest misstep can cause their death “The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the strong.” (Edwards 80) This is frightening because of the imminent threat that God poses on one’s life at all times. “You hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about it.” (Edwards 81) You are about to fall into a pit of flames, and the only thing holding you up is a meager thread which can snap at any moment

Comforting/Hopeful Comments/Image Why is it Comforting or Hopeful “The use of this awful subject may be for awakening unconverted persons in this congregation” (Edwards 80) You have the possibility of being saved from a horrible fate. “However you may have reformed your life and many things and may keep up a form of religion in your families and closets” (Edwards 81) Should you be damned, you have the ability to change your fate by reforming your thoughts and religion.
