2. As the seasons passed, the leaves fell into the pond. After many years, the pond started to become filled with leaves and dirt. What is going to happen to the pond? The fish?

3. As the pond filled up, there was no room for the fish to live. They started to die. The leaves sank on the bottom of the pond, and eventually they filled the entire pond. What do you think happened next?

4. As the leaves were broken down by the decomposers, they started to turn into soil. The soil started to fill the pond. What do you think happened next?

5. The soil was very rich in nutrients and some grass started growing where the pond once was. More and more grass grew until the area that was once a pond is now a field. Will it stay like this forever?

6. The field now goes through the stages of succession to eventually become a forest. Will it always be a forest?
