Chapter 14 History of Life
2
Biogenesis The principle of biogensis states that all living things come from other living things Before the 17 th century is was believed that life could come from nonliving things Spontaneous generation Mud gave way to fish, logs gave way to alligators Redi and Pasteur disproved this
3
Redi’s experiment Disproved spontaneous generation
4
Pasteur’s Experiment Won a prize to disprove spontaneous generation Proved microorganisms were in the air
5
The Origin of Earth All the elements found in organic compounds, are thought to have existed in the solar system and on Earth when it was formed How did they come together? Oparin and Haldane hypothesized the atmostphere contained NH3, ammonia; H2, hydrogen gas; H20, water vapor and other hydrogen carbon gases The believed high temps caused amino acids to form A cooling Earth caused water vapor to condense, creating lakes and seas
6
Miller & Urey Tested the idea of life coming from organic compounds The primordial soup theory- suggest that life began in a pond or ocean as a result of the combination of chemicals from the atmosphere and some form of energy to make amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, which would then evolve into all the species. Confused?
