3 2 Environment Everything that surrounds a living thing. Did you know that the word environment comes from a French word meaning “to circle; to surround.”

4 3 Ecosystem All the living and nonliving things that interact with each other in a given area.

5 4 Community All the populations that live together in the same place.

6 5 Population All the living things of the same kind that live in the same place at the same time.

7 6 grassland Land ecosystem that has many grasses and few trees.

8 7 desert An ecosystem that gets less than 25cm of rainfall a year.

9 8 tundra Land ecosystem that is cold and dry.

10 9 wetland Low land ecosystem that is covered by water at least part of the time during the year; marshes and swamps are wetlands.

11 10 producers Living things that make their own food.

12 11 consumer Living things that eat food.

13 12 herbivore Living things that eat only plants

14 13 carnivore Living things that hunt other animals for food.

15 14 omnivore Living things that eat plants and other animals for food.

16 15 prey Any animal that is hunted for by others for food.

17 16 predator A consumer that hunts other animals for food.

18 17 competition Struggle that happens when two or more than living things need the same resource.

19 18 decomposer A living thing that breaks down waste and things that have died.

20 19 decay To break down, or rot

21 20 germs Small living things that include bacteria and viruses, many of which can cause illness.

22 21 disease The name we give an illness
