JASON BARROCAS KEVIN HERNANDEZ TANISHA RICHARD DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY - MIAMI, FLORIDA Enhanced Hurricane Protection
2
Problem The purpose of this project is to design a retractable dome that could protect a home in the event of a hurricane The majority of damage is caused by the storm’s intense wind Hurricane shutters and impact glass protect only the windows
3
Project Goals Reduce rebuilding costs Protect human life Current advances in technology make it plausible to offer better protection The retractable roofs of stadiums offer a blueprint for retractable domes
4
Design Concepts A dome structure offers the best resistance to lift and drag forces Design Criteria: Ribbed Structure of Protective Dome Seven arched trusses Mesh material covering the frame Reduces wind speed by 60% Category 5 Hurricane – 155+ mph Reduces wind speed to a manageable level
5
Economic Feasibility Type Accordion Shutters Impact Glass Electric Roll Down Shutters MaterialsAl Wood, Glass Polyester Film Al Price Range$16-$20 / sq ft$30-$35 / sq ft$65-$75 / sq ft Est. Total Cost* $6,300.00 $11,375.00 $24,500.00 *Estimate was calculated using 350 sq ft of windows Estimated Cost for Enhanced Hurricane Protection 7 Trusses comprised of W16 X 26 I-Beams:$13,000 Goal for entire steel frame (trusses, pivots and joints):<$20,000 Goal for entire dome (parts and labor, fully installed):<$50,000
