Signs & Symptoms of STDs Bumps, rash, or sores on or near genital area. Warts Unusual discharge (color, text, amount or odor) Pain, burning, or itching in the pubic area Pain when urinating Pain in the abdominal area

WHO can get an STD? ANYONE!!! Teens & young people are affected by STDs more than any other age group 2/3 of the people who get gonorrhea or Chlamydia are 24 years of age or younger If you have sex with a person who has an STD, you are at risk for catching the disease

WHAT is the one sure way to prevent getting STDs? ABSTINENCE – the only 100% method of preventing an STD.

Four Important Facts of STDs STDs increase the chance of HIV infections. A person who has an STD often will not have any symptoms. STDs are sexist – they hurt women more than men All STDs are NOT curable.

How can you tell if someone has an STD? Often you cannot tell Seeing sores, blisters, warts or pimples near the genital area.

Why might it be difficult to tell your partner if you had an STD? Partner may be angry You might feel embarrassed, ashamed, you might feel afraid of losing your partner.

Transmission Game Write your name on the side of the index card that has the letter on it. Stand Up Walk around the group until I say “Stop” Stop in front of the person closest to you Discuss the question I will ask you After discussing sign each other’s card (side without the letter on it) & return to original owner

Transmission Game Exercise involving “verbal intercourse, but going to pretend it involved “sexual intercourse” Stand up if your have a “D” on your card You have a disease & anyone with their name has the disease as well Read the names of the people on your card(s) and stand up

What did you learn from this activity? One person can infect many by passing the disease from someone who passes it on to the next person STDs can be spread through unprotected vaginal, oral & anal sex People have sex, not only with their partner, but also everyone their partner has ever been sexually. It doesn’t feel good to have an STD You can’t always tell who is infected & who isn’t

STD infections among teens are real. Important to understand the need to practice abstinence in their relationships and make proud and responsible decisions. Being safe and not getting a STD is your responsibility and the responsibility of your boyfriend. ABSTINENCE is only sure way to prevent getting an STD

STOP, THINK & ACT: Introduction to Problem Solving Feeling pressure & conflict is normal People have to make decisions on a daily basis while experiencing pressure and conflict We do not have much time to think about what we should do, without a strategy we sometimes make unhealthy choices

STOP Why might you need to STOP if you were being pressured sexually? STOPPING is important because it gives you a chance to take a deep breath, calm down & collect yourself.

THINK Why might you need to think? THINKING keeps you, not your emotions, in control of the situation. You don’t want to overract.

THINK What is the problem? What am I being pressured to do? What are my choices? What do I want? How can I stay in control? What alternatives can I suggest? Have I considered all possible alternatives?
