2. a note from me… Welcome back! I hope you each enjoyed a restful and enjoyable October break. I have enjoyed hearing about some of your family adventures from last week! This is conference week and I look forward to meeting with each of you and discussing your child’s growth and progress. It is a great time to celebrate successes and set goals for areas of concern. If for any reason you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, please call or email as soon as possible so we can reschedule you during the week. Please keep in mind that the first quarter of the school year that we just completed is the easiest of the entire year. If your child’s report card shows some areas of concern, it may be time to reassess study skills and form some new habits. Curriculum and assignment s are gradually getting more difficult and expectations remain high. “Conference Week” is this week’s mystery word. Careful listening, following directions, and a positive and cooperative attitude are imperative to your child’s success in school and in life. As you know, our timed multiplication fact drills have begun. This is an individualized program, with students moving on to the next level as they pass off the current one they are working on. We begin with multiplication facts of 2, 5, and 10, and move on to facts of 9, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, usually in that order. Mastery of a particular level means that they have achieved 96% or 100% on three separate occasions. When this is done, they earn a spot on the “Math Mania Hall of Fame” in our third grade hallway, as well as have their names read on morning announcements. Congratulations to the following students who have passed off these levels: Multiplication facts of 2: Bastien Langford, Nathan Smith, Raquel Storts Next week is Red Ribbon Week, and we will spend some time discussing the importance of remaining drug/alcohol free. We will learn about different ways to “Say NO!” and then practice some of those ways in role playing situations. I hope you will take some time at home to discuss the dangers of drug and alcohol use/abuse with your child as well as how to handle peer pressure and make good choices. Our Halloween Party will be held Friday, October 31. Costumes, masks, colored hair, etc are not permitted, as per school policy. Our mothers who signed up to help with the party will be contacted to help with games/activities and provide treats. We thank you in advance for your willingness to help us make some fun memories. Parents, if your child is bringing a snack to eat following morning recess each day, please make sure they are small, healthy snacks. Large bags of chips and candy bars are finding their way into backpacks and are inappropriate for snack time. Finger foods such as a granola bar, a few small pieces of fruit, small packages of crackers, etc. are considered appropriate. It’s just a snack….not a meal! Do you teach manners in your home and encourage your child to promote kindness and courtesy? Help your child learn not only how to be a kind, caring friend but how to help a classmate who may be treated unkindly, left out, etc. By helping your child learn how to think through actions he could take to help another will make it easier for him/her to handle a situation when it occurs. Starting a friendly conversation, inviting a lonely child to join them at lunch or on the playground, a sincere compliment, or just a simple smile will go a long way in helping develop positive and friendly feelings. As your child tries these actions, he/she also learns many important lessons. They will learn how it feels to do something positive to help another person and more importantly, they will learn that they have the power to make a difference in someone’s life. “Inch by inch it’s a cinch.
