Writing Formulas for Ionic Compounds Follow these steps: 1. What is the name of the compound? 2. List the symbols and charges for the cation and anion. 3. Determine the ratio of ions in the compound. All compounds are NEUTRAL so the total charges on the cations and anions must add up to ZERO! 4. Write the formula. Cation symbol 1 st Anion symbol 2 nd Use subscripts to show the ratio of the ions in the compound. 5. Is your answer reasonable? Does it make sense? Check your work.
