Acid Nomenclature  Acids are an important class of hydrogen- containing compounds.  For now, an acid is defined as a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H + ) when dissolved in water.  There are two common types of acids:  binary acids  oxyacids

Binary Acids  a compound formed between: hydrogen and a monatomic anion –OR– hydrogen and a polyatomic ion that does not contain oxygen  Rules for naming binary acids: 1. Begin with the prefix hydro- 2. Add the name (or root) of the nonmetallic anion 3. Add the suffix –ic and the word acid

Binary Acids  hydro + anion nonmetal root + ic + acid  example: HCl hydrochloric acid  example: H 2 S hydrosulfuric acid

Oxyacids  a compound formed between: hydrogen and a polyatomic ion that contains oxygen  Rules for naming oxyacids: 1. Name the polyatomic ion 2. Change “-ate” to -ic ; “-ite” to –ous 3. Add the word acid 4. The oxoanion prefixes “per-” and “hypo-” remain ate-ic-ite-ous a t e - i c - i t e - o u s

Oxyacids  example: HBrO 4 HBrO 3 HBrO HBrO 2 perbromic acid hypobromous acid bromous acid bromic acid

Acid Nomenclature  Name the following compounds: H 2 SO 4 H3PH3P sulfuric acid HClO 4 hydrophosphoric acid perchloric acid

Acid Nomenclature  Write formulas for the following acids: hydrofluoric acid phosphoric acid HF sulfurous acid H 3 PO 4 H 2 SO 3 H+H+ H+H+ H+H+ F-F- PO 4 3- SO 3 2-

Base Nomenclature  Bases are another important class of chemical compounds.  For now, a base is defined as a substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH - ) when dissolved in water.  Rules for naming bases: “same as usual”

Salt Nomenclature  Salts are another important class of chemical compounds.  A salt is an ionic compound composed of a cation from a base and an anion from an acid.  Rules for naming salts: “same as usual”

Acid, Base, & Salt Nomenclature  Identify the following as an acid, base or salt; then, name the compound: HNO 3 NaOH NaNO 3 acid base salt nitric acid sodium hydroxide sodium nitrate Ca(OH) 2 H2SH2S basecalcium hydroxide acidhydrosulfuric acid

Properties of Acids and Bases  Complete Acid, base, or salt worksheet  Read pages 453 – 462 Answer questions:  p.462 #1-4  p.477 #17-20
