2
Compound 2 or more elements combined in a fixed proportion Binary Composed of 2 elements
3
Ion Charged particle Atoms that lost or gained electrons Has more or less electrons than protons
4
Oxidation number A positive or negative number that indicates how many electrons an atom gains, loses, or shares to become stable
5
Ionic compounds are neutral The individual elements have charges but the compound is neutral The formula must have the same number of positive atoms as negative atoms
6
Group #Oxidation #Ion Examples 11+Na 1+, Li 1+, K 1+ 22+Mg 2+, Ca 2+, Ba 2+ 133+Al 3+ 153-N 3-, P 3- 162-O 2-, S 2-, Se 2- 171-F 1-, Cl 1-, Br 1-, I 1-
7
Naming Cations Name the metal by saying the element and adding the word “ion” Na 1+ sodium ion Mg 2+ magnesium ion Ca 2+ calcium ion K 1+ potassium ion
8
Naming Anions Name the non-metal by dropping the ending off the element name and adding “ide” F 1- fluoride (from fluorine) O 2- oxide (from oxygen) S 2- sulfide P 3- phosphide
9
Writing Names of Binary Ionic Compounds Both the cation and anion must be named Follow these steps
10
Write down the formula of the ionic compound. Let's say the ionic compound you're working with is NaCl Step 1
11
Write the name of the cation (metal). Na is sodium. So, write Sodium. Step 2
12
Write the name of the anion (nonmetal) with the "-ide" ending. Cl is chlorine. To add the "ide" ending, just drop the last syllable, “- ine," and add "-ide" instead. Chlorine becomes chloride. Step 3
13
Combine the names. NaCl can be written as sodium chloride. Step 4
14
Anions “ide” ending F-F- fluorideO 2- oxide Cl - chlorideS 2- sulfide Br - bromideN 3- nitride I-I- iodideP 3- phosphide
