Final Walk Through
2
Metallic Bonds A chemical bond of the type holding together the atoms in a solid metal or alloy. The positive ions occupy lattice positions. The valence electrons are able to move freely (or almost freely) through the lattice, forming an 'electron gas‘ Ex.) Copper, Zinc, Iron, Cobalt, Silver, Gold, Platinum.
3
Ionic Bonds Bond between a metal and a non-metal Valence e- are transferred from the metal to the non-metal. Cation- Ion with a positive charge. Anion- Ion with a negative charge. Ca + Cl Show the transfer of valence e- Write the chemical formula Name the compound Identify the Cation and Anion
4
Covalent Bonds Bond between two non-metals Valence e- are shared Polyatomic ions can form.(Atoms that have a positive or negative charge in a covalent bond.) ex. OH- H + O Show the sharing of electrons Name the formula Write the chemical name
