HS2 in Sheffield The impacts David Redfern

HS2 in Sheffield: the impacts The HS2 station at Meadowhall The proposed site for the new HS2 station in Sheffield is at Meadowhall shopping centre. Meadowhall is 6 km east of the centre of Sheffield. There is a large area of land, currently derelict, between the shopping centre and the M1 motorway on the Tinsley Viaduct. This area is sometimes used as an overspill car park for the shopping centre. It has been earmarked for the new HS2 station. The proposed site of the station has met with some controversy.

HS2 in Sheffield: the impacts Why the site makes sense for Sheffield Space There is a large brownfield space, the Tinsley Yard, for building new infrastructure. There is also room for new businesses to move in. Existing infrastructure The new station would be on the supertram network. This already serves Sheffield and by the time HS2 is constructed, it will connect to Rotherham too. The M1 on the Tinsley viaduct is accessible via Junction 34. Location It would serve South Yorkshire, not just Sheffield city centre. Most of the official documentation references South Yorkshire, not Sheffield. Rotherham and Barnsley would benefit too.

HS2 in Sheffield: the impacts The location of the site The following link shows an aerial photo off the proposed site in relation to the city of Sheffield: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21235495http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21235495 A pdf providing maps and plans of the site can be accessed here: http://assets.hs2.org.uk/sites/default/files/consulation_library/pdf/P2C58_Shef field%20Station.pdf http://assets.hs2.org.uk/sites/default/files/consulation_library/pdf/P2C58_Shef field%20Station.pdf

HS2 in Sheffield: the impacts Why the site does not make sense for Sheffield Meadowhall is already busy as a transport hub. It is adjacent to an exit from the M1 motorway. Travelling into Sheffield city centre from the Meadowhall station will add 20/30 minutes to the journey time on HS2 from London (1 h 15 min), giving a similar overall time to the new proposed electrified service on the existing rail route (1 h 40 min). Many city-centre businesses want a city centre station for ease of access benefits and thereby growth.

HS2 in Sheffield: the impacts An argument for the scheme HS2 could support a significant amount of additional development near Sheffield Meadowhall Station, which could in turn give rise to between 4,000 and 5,400 jobs and between 250 and 300 homes. The station could displace an estimated 800 jobs; however, it is likely that the majority of these jobs would be accommodated in the region. Much of the Lower Don Valley at Meadowhall is earmarked for future development, with schemes associated with the Sheffield Enterprise Zone and the Meadowhall Quadrant masterplan around the proposed HS2 station. HS2 – Engine for growth

HS2 in Sheffield: the impacts An argument against the scheme A Meadowhall station would undermine our city centre and would be the wrong economic decision for Sheffield because the business benefits and investment will come from the station being at the heart of the city, and linking us to other cities centre-to-centre. Birmingham's proposed new High Speed station will be at the centre of their city as will London's, and I fully expect Leeds and Manchester will have central locations too. Why does the Government think we should be any different?’ Paul Blomfield (Sheffield Central MP, Labour)
