SIG Goals Be active and work as a community of practice within the available resources of members to identify and disseminate ways of working which support research impact on policy and practice; review the politics of policy and the impact of policy on research Monitor and comment on the global export of policies and their impact on children in schools take a long term view in making plans to achieve our goals support peer collaboration and collective responsibility expand the network take responsibility for knowledge management in our areas

3. Strands of work The list is not meant to be exclusive but rather, to help members get a sense of the main interests of members and who to contact: Strand 1. Research methods likely to provide strong evidence on which policy and practice could draw and addressing the REF need to demonstrate reach and impact and international significance. Knowledge mobilisation and knowledge translation strategies including new forms of publishing building on Michael Bassey's 2000 publication for BERA on effective research publishing being at 4 levels and the MESH Guides approach to synthesising and publishing for research users www.MESHguides.org. Support Research synthesis: Pull together and support reviews of the evidence base through systematic reviews – perhaps working with the Campbell collaboration and support rapid evidence assessments (see Keith Topping and Phil Davis’s work ) Co-convenor: Lorraine Godden, Queens, Ontario, Canada Co-convenor: Dr Jacqueline Baxter, The Open University UK ( to be reconfirmed for 14-15) Strand 4 Critical Social Policy Colin Mills and colleagues Manchester

Proposals for the way we work: 1) Governance: We have a convenor and co-convenors who lead strands of work to develop the SIG work. 2) Partnership: We work with partners on events and projects which progress thinking and work on the strands below. 3) We hold events to engage SIG members 4) Possible Publication goals: INSIGHTS briefings 1500 words, update BERA 2000 Good Practice for Research Writing, systematic reviews, rapid evidence assessments, MESH Guides from these. 5) We develop and online community for the SIG – discussions are underway about the software to use.

5. Priorities for educational research and policy making Those attending were asked to identify priorities for research related to the SIG. Proposals were: 1.Assessment and policy 2.School governance and diversification of the education system 3.HEI policy and research 4.Engaging with school communities

Knowledge mobilisation and knowledge translation strategies - Mobilising the knowledge from masters EdD/PhD theses theses to produce research summaries via MESH guides for users – Online and London ½ day event with UCET CPD committee possibly – Tanya to check with UCET Strand 3. Support Research synthesis: – London: ½ day event Partnership event with Ucet ResearchCommittee – updating the TDA review of partnership approaches and publishing the update
