3 Safeguarding Children's Service Lead GP Child Sexual Exploitation: Definition The coercion or manipulation of children and young people into taking part in sexual activities. It is a form of sexual abuse involving an exchange of some form of payment which can include money, mobile phones and other items, drugs, alcohol, a place to stay, ‘protection’ or affection. 5 How many are children affected in the UK? Last year Barnardo's services worked with 1,452 children and young people who had been sexually exploited. The true number is likely to be much higher. For victims, the pain of their ordeal, fear that they will not be believed, fear of their abusers and of the CJ process means they are often too scared to complain. 15 A multi-agency strategy meeting must be convened for children at moderate or significant risk of CSE in order to; –share and clarify information; –identify risks and agree on action to address each risk; –consider possible action against perpetrators; –develop a written plan to safeguard the child or young person; –agree a date to review the plan within three months and be clear about where individual responsibilities lie; –decide who will undertake direct work with the child or young person to enable recovery.
