Ask independent colleagues to do mock evaluations, based on the published evaluation criteria! Make a reference to the general /political/ context of your proposal/application (e.g. 4th common EU-RU space in research, education & culture, EC-RU S&T Cooperation Agreement) Become an evaluator for European programmes yourself! Not only major research institutions get involved, also smaller ones participate in FP projects, if they have expertise. Check CORDIS web-site regularly for new calls & for partner search Most important step in joining an FP project: Find the right partner at the right time! =>For partner search: build on contacts already established through projects supported by INTAS, TEMPUS, ISTC, and within bilateral scientific programmes with EU Member States.

(e.g. speed of reply to incoming e-mails) Personal contacts are the single most important factor in the formation of new project consortia! =>Make yourself & your organization known; participate in meetings and pursue active networking. Attend brokerages, conferences, workshops. !If you are not successful with a proposal, keep trying! Re-work & re-submit proposals, based on evaluation comments received.

8. 23/04/2010 # 8 Frequent weaknesses in project proposals Authors do not follow the guidelines Proposal is incomplete, or not clearly presented, and/or too long Scientific "state of the art" insufficiently described and/or relevant references are missing Objectives are not focussed enough Proposed research is not novel No/too little justification of why the research is relevant – scientifically and/or socio- economically Expected results (deliverables) are unclear Authors do not properly understand the question on "risk" English is too poor to be properly understood Project is too ambitious for time-scale and/or for funding In experimental projects: insufficient funds for equipment, consumables / unclear if the required resources are available Costs in some categories unexplained or not matching the needs (too high or too low) Unclear management (e.g. coordination meetings, communication, inter-play between teams) Expertise of teams overlaps or does not match the requirements for the tasks allocated to them No or insufficient publication lists of the participating teams No plans for dissemination of results etc.
