Five Officials Back Judge Position - Kickoff BAfter Kick: 1Kick to your side, pick up runner and follow. 2Kick outside opposite inbounds line: aMove cautiously with play bObserve action of other players in vicinity of runner. cServe as clean-up behind, to side of, and around runner. 3Maintain position enabling coverage of your sideline at all times. 4Mark out-of-bounds spot if kick goes out of bounds in your area: aBean bag spot if last touched inbounds by R. bDrop penalty marker if untouched inbounds by R.

Five Officials Back Judge Position - Running Play AAfter ball is spotted: 1Position: aAt least 15 to 20 yards beyond defensive line of scrimmage and always deeper than deepest defensive back. bWhen ball is on inbounds line, position no wider than near upright. bOn single and/or double-spead formation, adjust position according to location of linesman and line judge to provide best coverage. 2Areas of responsibility: aTime 25-second count. bCount B players

4. Five Officials Back Judge Position - Running Play BAfter snap: 1Key tight end or end on strong side. If formation is balanced, key end on side of line judge. 2On runs to either side of field, move so runner is between you and either linesman or line judge while observing blocks in front of runner. 3Retreat to be in position behind deepest receiver. Stay far enough away to keep play boxed in. 4Maintain inside-out coverage. 5Cover players who are deeper than linesman or line judge. 6When runner breaks free, cover action around him. 7Cover goal line. 8On out-of-bounds runs, especially in team areas, move into area of dead ball and assist officials in maintaining order.

Five Officials Back Judge Position - Forward Pass AAfter ball is spotted: 1Position: aAt least 15 to 20 yards beyond defensive line of scrimmage and always deeper than deepest defensive back. bWhen ball is on inbounds line, position no wider than near upright. cOn single and/or doubhle-spead formation, adjust position according to location of linesman and line judge to provide best coverage. 2Areas of responsibility: aTime 25-second count. bCount B players.

6. Five Officials Back Judge Position - Forward Pass BAfter snap: 1Key on tight end as play develops. Retreat in order to be in position behind deepest receivers. 2Cover deep receivers down middle and to each sideline. 3When pass is thrown, move quickly to ball: aWatch for interference by either team. bBe ready to rule on possible fumble or illegal pass after completion. 4Be ready to rule on all passes near goal line and end line. 5If pass is incomplete in your area: aSound whistle. bGive incomplete-pass signal. cRetrieve ball and relay to nearby official. 6If pass is complete, sound whistle when ball becomes dead: aMove to spot ball. bWhen line-to-gain has been reached, give time-out signal.

7. Five Officials Back Judge Position Scrimmage Kick AAfter ball is spotted: 1Position: 7-10 yards wider than and in front of deepest receiver on linesman”s side of field. 2Count R players

Five Officials Back Judge Position Scrimmage Kick BAfter snap: 1Carry bean bag in hand during down to mark first touching, momentum or fumble. 2When kick is short to either sideline: aLinesman or line judge will assume responsibility for ball. bObserve action of players around ball. 3Cover long or deep kick out of bounds on linesman’s side. aWhen kicked ball goes out in flight, sound whistle. bGive time-out signal. cHave referee spot you on sideline and hold spot until ball is spotted.

9. Five Officials Back Judge Position Scrimmage Kick 4Cover all kicks down middle and be ready to rule on whether kick is touched by either team: aIf ball is muffed, be prepared to rule on possession. bBe alert for hand-off and reverse. cWhen K is first to touch scrimmage kick which is moving: 1Mark spot of first touching with bean bag. 2Continue to cover play. dIf K is first to touch kick at rest beyond neutral zone, sound whistle, give time-out signal and mark spot. 5Following fair catch: aSound whistle, give time-out signal and mark spot. bBe sure referee knows it was a fair catch. 6Where fair catch is not made: aStay with ball. bLet line judge observe by signaler.

10. Five Officials Back Judge Position Scrimmage Kick 7Move with runner who catches kick and advance. aOther officials will ordinarily pick up runner near line of scrimmage. bWhen this is done, delay and observe action behind ball. cWhen one of the other officials is screened out and not able to pick up runner, move with him and sound whistle when ball becomes dead. 8When kick becomes dead: aSound whistle immediately and give time-out signal bBe prepared to rule on touckback while giving appropriate signals. cInform referee of ball status before placing it for next play. 9If kick is caught inside 5-yard line and player is downed in his end zone or ball goes out-of-bounds there, be prepared to rule on whether his momentum took him into end zone. 1Mark spot of catch inside 5-yard line with bean bag.

11. Five Officials Back Judge Position Field-Goal Attempt or Try AAfter ball is spotted: 1Position: Beyond end zone and behind your upright where you fell most comfortable and have best coverage of upright. 2Count R players. 3Time 25-second count

12. Five Officials Back Judge Position Field-Goal Attempt or Try BAfter snap: 1Assume responsibility for end line and for determining if kick goes over or under crossbar and inside upright. 2Sound whistle when successful kick passes upright or when it is apparently unsuccessful after breaking goal-line plane. 3Signal score or no score. 4Be prepared to move if kick is blocked, obviously short, or a fake: aKey tight end on your side. bIf run develops to your vacated side, quickly move along end line to back pylon to rule on sideline. cNext move is toward goal line to assist. dWhen run situations develop to line-judge side, he has primary sideline responsibility with referee assistance.

13. Five Officials Back Judge Position Goal-Line Play APosition: Not as deep as for other scrimmage plays 1Start on end line if snap is from 10-yard line or inside. 2Assume complete responsibility of end-line coverage. BTime 25-second count.

14. Five Officials Back Judge Position After a Touchback, Safety, Try or Field Goal ACount proper team players. Be alert for illegal substitutions. BTime 25-second count when appropriate.

15. Five Officials Back Judge Position Administering Penalties AHelp obtain ball. BAssist in holding spot of foul or recovering penalty marker. CAssist in relaying foul information to appropriate sideline.

16. Five Officials Back Judge Position Measuring for First Down using Traditional Rods and Chain ADo not permit team attendants to enter field. BHelp clear players for measurement area. CObserve all players. DTend ball at time of measurement.

17. Five Officials Back Judge Position Time-Out Procedure ATime 60-second interval; notify referee at 45 seconds and again when 60-seconds interval expires.

18. Five Officials Back Judge Position Ending-of-Period Procedure AIf field clock is not used: 1Notify referee approximately four minutes before end of second and fourth periods. 2Approximately 30 seconds before time for period expires, notify referee that time may expire during the next down. 3When time expires and ball becomes dead, signal referee by raising arm above head, sound whistle and give time-out signal. BIf field clock is used: 1When facing clock, be responsible for knowing when time expires. 2If time expires prior to snap: aSound your whistle to prevent snap, if possible. bIf ball is snapped immediately after time has expired, sound whistle loud and long, and give time-out signal.

19. Five Officials Back Judge Position Between-Periods Procedure AObserve teams while moving to corresponding spot on other end of field. BAssume responsibilities as for time-out. CCheck team box and huddle areas for appropriate conference procedure as during charged time-out. DTime 60-second interval; notify referee at 45 seconds and again when 60-second interval expires.

20. Five Officials Back Judge Position Between-Halves Procedure AKeep time during intermission. BTake position near sideline on R’s 20-yard line opposite linesman.
