Project Mission Taking steps toward improving the quality of care for Iowa’s infants & toddlers.

Specific Goals Establish a statewide network of certified PITC trainers. Provide training and support for infant and toddler caregivers. Integrate statewide professional development system that supports providers. Embed philosophy in pre-service.

Outcomes Non-parental care provided to infants & toddlers in Iowa will increase in quality Providers will demonstrate improved caregiving practices. Providers will increase their qualifications. Number of infant/toddler providers attending specific trainings will increase. Providers holding infant/toddler CDA credentials will increase. Increase in for-credit courses Partnerships with related systems Public Awareness

Trainers Trainer applicants are sought and accepted from a wide variety of early childhood professionals: Child care providers & administration Early Head Start Community college and university faculty Area Education Agency specialists Community action agencies Health programs Iowa Child Care & Early Education Network Home visitation specialists Curriculum specialists Parent Educators

Partners Community partners, (primarily staff and faculty from Community Colleges and Public and Private Four-Year Institutions) agreeing to infuse the information within their own settings: Iowa State University ISU Extension Community Colleges & Universities: Iowa Lakes CC Des Moines Area CC Eastern Iowa CC Graceland University Southwestern CC Kirkwood CC St. Ambrose University

Iowa Iowa ranks 2 nd for the percentage (79) of working parents with children five and under. The Infant Toddler Workgroup of the Iowa State Child Care Advisory Council recognized a need for higher quality infant & toddler care It was their recommendation to bring WestEd’s PITC training to the state, using the Infant Toddler Earmark from the Child Care Dev. Block Grant. WestEd is nationally recognized as the leader of infant & toddler caregiver training

Training Plan Program Attendance Incentive: * Approximately 20% of providers who attended IA PITC from January 2002 - June 2002 attended an entire series. * Providers who qualify, apply, and commit to a training plan are eligible to receive $250 stipend for attending 95% of the series (46 hours).
